15W højttalersystem kan forsynes via USB

NXT introducerer USB-forsynet højttaler evalueringskit, der kan levere 15 W per kanal (in english).

NXT plc has developed an ultra-efficient stereo speaker reference kit capable of delivering boost audio power of 15 Watts per channel powered solely by a USB connection. The speakers are intended to enable consumer product developers to evaluate NXT's DyadUSB amplifier module and matched drive units known as Balanced Mode Radiators (BMR).

Design engineers and product decision-makers will be able to experience at first hand the hi-fi audio quality and sound levels delivered from the small form-factor and observe the power efficiency of NXT's combined electronics and transducer technologies.

In addition to offering component and module solutions, NXT will sell the speakers to electronics manufacturers who need only to make cosmetic and branding changes in order to launch consumer products based on the design. A combination of patented technologies has made it possible to produce high quality, high power audio from a USB port that can only deliver a maximum power supply of 2.5 Watts (5V at 500mA) to the speakers.

The first is an Audium silicon chip that is at the heart of NXT's DyadUSB amplifier module. This integrated circuit is up to 20 times more efficient than other amplifier chips. It exploits the high peak-to-average ratio of typical speech and music signals, operating efficiently from a low supply voltage most of the time but delivering a higher voltage to the amplifier's output transistors when they need it to handle peak sound levels.

Other patented techniques are used to cut circuit losses, minimising the power supply requirements of the amplifier. The amplifier module is closely matched to the BMR drivers. The drivers, which are already widely used in consumer electronic products, operate differently from conventional loudspeaker coils. They harness resonances in simple panel shapes to create speakers with a very flat frequency response, and wide directivity, even at high frequencies.

The evaluation speakers will be demonstrated to major consumer electronics companies from early September 2010, and are expected to be available to design engineers by the end of this year. They will be supplied with a software utility that enables the amplifier chip's on-board filters to be set up to evaluate voicing, stereo effects and other equalisation capabilities.
