Første USB Audio 2.0 reference-design

XMOS lancerer industriens første komplette USB Audio 2.0 referencedesign, der baner vejen for at opbygge USB-løsninger med højest mulige audiokvalitet (in english).

XMOS has announced the industry's first reference design for USB Audio 2.0. The solution enables standard computer-based systems to deliver bit-perfect prosumer quality sound.

Implemented entirely in software, using the XMOS XS1-L1 event driven processor, the design supports hi-speed USB Audio 2.0 connectivity and up to 6 input and 6 output audio channels at 24-bit resolution and a sample rate of 192 kHz. Higher audio channel counts are also supported using the XMOS L2 and G4 devices.

A key factor in the reproduction of high quality audio, the reference design's unique asynchronous clocking mode achieves sub-3ms roundtrip latency, making it suitable for live music playback. The credit card sized reference design board will suit the development of speakers, home theatre systems, sound cards, musical instruments and professional audio equipment.

Gordon Rankin, Chief Scientist at Wavelength Audio, a designer of award-winning USB DACs says:
- I'm glad to see XMOS producing a USB Audio 2.0 solution that's clearly focused on achieving excellent sound quality. In particular, its asynchronous mode is a vital ingredient in the reduction of digital audio jitter which results in superior sound reproduction."

James Foster, CEO of XMOS says:
- Streamed PC audio delivery and replay has rapidly become the norm, and it's essential that the industry continues to design systems capable of producing the audio quality levels that discerning consumers and professionals have come to expect.

The reference design's software-defined workflow also enables users to readily adapt and customize the solution to handle specific interfacing requirements, DSP algorithms for audio enhancements and custom 'front-of-box' peripherals. To reduce development time, XMOS' ready-made library of software components already includes I2S, S/PDIF and many other interfaces.

The design works with the Mac OS-X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Audio 2.0 native class driver, and XMOS has teamed with Thesycon to provide Audio 2.0 Class driver support for Windows. The XMOS USB Audio 2.0 reference design kit is available now and priced at $149 USD.

XMOS is transforming the way in which electronic products are designed. Its revolutionary event-driven multi-core processors make it easy to build systems entirely in software. XMOS designers enjoy the fastest route from idea to product, using standard programmable chips to create complete systems combining interface, DSP and control software. For entrepreneurs, researchers and designers in leading electronics brands, XMOS enables innovation and dramatically reduces costs.
