Qualcomm’s announcement of its Snapdragon X35 5G Modem-RF System is an industry first to address the forthcoming 5G NR-Light specification. It will explode the number of connected next-generation 5G mobile devices.
Fundamentally, the Snapdragon X35 platform is a new streamlined, cost-effective, and power-efficient architecture with a reduced footprint for use in less complex, more compact 5G devices. The platform provides support for both LTE and 5G NR-Light, meaning OEMs can develop devices that coexist with a wide range of 4G and 5G device types.
The design essence of 5G-NR Light is to expand the growth of energy-constrained, low-cost products or small form factors required to transmit simple, less bandwidth-demanding applications over 5G that do not require low latency.
Such an expansion in 5G-NR Light use cases will lead to the development of more significant numbers of device form factors and sectors, leading to a large increase in the volume of products, taking 5G market growth way beyond smartphones. Indeed, the specification profile lends itself well to specific industrial, consumer, and IoT segments, including wearables, IIoT sensors, camera surveillance devices, mobile accessories, and XR smart glasses.
Qualcomm is planning to start sampling Snapdragon X35 in the first half of 2023 and says commercial mobile devices should be launched by the first half of 2024. According to ABI Research, 5G NR-Light devices volume will start to grow in the major target sectors from 2025 and reach close to 1 billion consumer mobile items by 2030.
For the time being, the industry is just scratching the surface with this gradual evolution of 5G, taking its first steps to provide an explosion of enhanced user experiences and use cases. This aspiration will be buoyed significantly by Qualcomm’s latest announcement and the broader market onset of 5G NR-Light, boosting 5G deployments at scale while meeting various market needs. Qualcomm will be remembered as the pioneer in this regard, opening the doors wide for 5G connectivity to entrench many IoT segments across consumer and enterprise markets.
