Atlantik Elektronik introduces Quectel‘s M80 cellular network module. With a multitude of interfaces the M80 is a solution for applications in the areas of track&trace, meter reading and POS (Point-of-Sales). With very low current draw, high sensitivity and optimization of transmission power it is ideally suited for battery-driven usage.
The M80 offers high efficiency in small dimensions of only 23 x 25 x 2.6mm. As the data upload speed into the internet is in most cases the decisive criteria for the applications even GPRS Class 12 is supported. This allows transmission rates of up to 85.6 kbit/s.
In addition a good number of internet protocols have been integrated into the module, such as SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) for sending emails or MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) which allows transmission of more complex messages, pictures and also short video sequences to one or more recipients.
The three UART interfaces come in handy here, as one can be used to send AT commands, the next one for a transparent data transmission, and the third one for debugging during the development stage.
A further highlight of the M80 is its robustness. Utmost important is of course the support of the extremely wide temperature range from 45°C to +85°C. This is advantageous in remote monitoring applications. The high thickness of the PCB of 0.8mm helps to withstand shock and vibration situations. Especially the often contacted pins for the antenna and for the SIM card interface are very ESD resistant and therefore protected against damage.
The longevity of the product and an attached battery is raised by a very low current draw. It is as low as 1.1 mA@DRx=5 in sleep mode and therefore about 30 to 50% below industry standard. Equally impressive is the sensitivity which takes a pole position with down to -108.5 dBm. These features make the M80 a perfect modem for eCall and ERA-GLONASS products. Both systems are intended to send an automatic alarm in case of an accident.
Audio applications are addressed with the M80, too. For analog implementations 2 inputs and 3 outputs – one of them with an integrated Class-AB amplifier driving up to 800mW – are offered. A PCM interface gives flexibility for digital implementations. This allows, for instance, the design of a voice recording system with a minimum of peripheral components. To log data it is possible to address up to 32 GByte of storage via an SD card interface.
Fast acquaintance, first tests and implementation as well as software commands are easily possible with the evaluation board. This includes all components necessary to start without any hurdles. Atlantik Elektronik offers SIM cards for testing to allow a smooth start, but also for the final applications.
These include mobile vehicle tracking systems, people, pet and goods surveillance, electricity, gas and water meters as well as vending machines and POS terminals. Also within Atlantik Elektronik’s RANGER is a gateway for many wireless standards, GSM/GPRS modems from Quectel are being used.
